Transformative Pedagogy in Architecture and Urbanism is a new, updated, re-written edition of „New Trends in Architectural Education: Designing the Design Studio“. As a new round of pedagogical dialogue on architecture and urbanism it resets the stage for debating future visions of transformative pedagogy and its impact on design education. This is a forward looking effort that comes to amalgamate concerns, concepts, and practices that Ashraf M. Salama has explored and introduced over a period of two decades. It is about balancing the creative act required for creating responsive environments and the social and environmental responsibilities that should be embedded in this act. It is also about understanding how knowledge is produced, what the components of such knowledge are, and what are the learning processes and social practices that can be used to transmit it. Structured in five chapters the book presents a wide range of innovative and practical methodologies for teaching architectural and urban design. It tracs the roots of architectural education and offers several contrasting ideas and strategies of design teaching practices.
- A New Theory for Transformative Pedagogy in Architecture and Urbanism
- The Architect, the Profession, and Society
- The Conventional Approach to Studio Teaching Practice
- Against the Conventional Studio Pedagogy
- Empowering Transformative Pedagogy: A Knowledge-Based Architectural and Urban Design Studio
“... Ashraf Salama aggressively identifies the ritualistic aspects of architectural education that act as constraints to innovation. ... this is an important book because it probes into the motivations of design educators by placing a mirror before them and allows for a critical examination of the design studio. Dr. Salama paves the way for design educators to openly discuss and debate the delivery system of architectural education and its impact on the future role of the architect ...” HENRY SANOFF, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Architecture, North Carolina State University, NC, USA

A THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE

More than a decade in the making, this is a textbook of architecture, useful for every architect: from first-year students, to those taking senior design studio, to graduate students writing a Ph.D. dissertation in architectural theory, to experienced practicing architects. It is very carefully written so that it can be read even by the beginning architecture student. The information contained here is a veritable gold mine of design techniques. This book teaches the reader how to design by adapting to human needs and sensibilities, yet independently of any particular style. Here is a unification of genuine architectural knowledge that brings a new clarity to the discipline. It explains much of what people instinctively know about architecture, and puts that knowledge for the first time in a concise, understandable form. The later chapters of this new book touch on very sensitive topics: what drives architects to produce the forms they build; and why architects use only a very restricted visual vocabulary. Is it personal inventiveness, or is it something more, which perhaps they are not even aware of? There has not been such a book treating the very essence of architecture.

ANTI-ARCHITECTURE AND DECONSTRUCTION - THIRD EDITION
Paperback, 272 Seiten, englisch

“The Emperor Has No Clothes” is an old adage, but, in the sad case of Deconstructivism, it is absolutely appropriate, as the style is really nothing more than Modernism in a new guise. Modernists, notably the Bauhäusler, aimed for the clean slate the tabula rasa jettisoning everything that went before. Yet, at times, they claimed links with antecedents such as the Parthenon (Jeanneret-Gris alias Le Corbusier, and company), the English Arts-and-Crafts Movement (Pevsner et. al.), and Prussian Neo-Classicism (Mies van der Rohe) to give a spurious historical ancestry to their aims and creations. Now all sorts of barmy links and precedents are being claimed for the works of Deconstructivists by Deconstructivist architects and their supporters.
This book is the beginning of a long-overdue counterattack.

STADTRAUM / URBAN SPACE

This book shows that in our modern cities we have lost sight of the traditional understanding of urban spaces. The cause of this loss is familiar to all city dwellers who are aware of their environment and sensitive enough to compare the town planning achievements of the present and the past and who have the strength of character to pronounce sentence on the way things have gone. What has to be clearly defined is what should be understood by the term urban space and what meaning it holds within the urban structure, so that we can go on to examine whether the concept of urban space retains some validity in contemporary town planning and on what grounds. ’Space’ in this context is a hotly disputed concept. Not a new definition is generated, but its original meaning is brought back into currency.
